The Owo Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has launched a health-focused intervention aimed at reducing road traffic crashes among commercial drivers in Ondo State.
The initiative, held at the Ijebu-Owo motor park, forms part of the corps’ 2026 strategy to achieve a 10 per cent reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries.
Led by the Unit Commander, Assistant Corps Commander JK Ajayi, the programme featured health talks as well as free blood pressure and blood sugar checks for drivers.
The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area, represented by Aminu O. Rasaq, flagged off the exercise and commended the FRSC for extending its efforts beyond enforcement to public health.
Ajayi said the initiative was designed to tackle factors such as fatigue, poor health and reduced alertness, which often contribute to road accidents.
He said, “The health of drivers is critical to road safety. Monitoring conditions like blood pressure and sugar levels can help prevent emergencies while driving.”
The outreach attracted a large turnout of commercial drivers and received support from religious leaders, including representatives of the Anglican Diocese of Owo and the Chief Imam of the town, Alhaji Yunus Ariola.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Ijebu-Owo branch, Ojo Ogudu, described the programme as timely and beneficial to drivers, while the FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads through community engagement and public enlightenment.
