They say you should never judge a book by its cover, yet first impressions are often formed before a single word is spoken. The way an individual dresses, grooms himself or herself and presents his or her overall appearance can influence how others perceive them. Fashion is more than wearing stylish or expensive clothes; it is a means of expressing personality, confidence, culture and professionalism. Whether at a job interview, in a classroom, or at a social gathering, appearance often shapes the first opinion people have of someone.
“The way you dress is often the first thing people notice.” These were the words of Mr. Adekunle Praise, a student, who believes clothing plays an important role in creating first impressions. According to him, neat dressing reflects self-respect and consideration for others. He explained that while clothes do not determine a person’s character, they often influence whether people are willing to approach, trust, or listen to someone during their first meeting. He added that students who dress appropriately are often seen as more responsible and confident.
Psychologists explain that people naturally make quick judgements based on visible cues such as clothing, grooming and body language. These judgements may include assumptions about a person’s confidence, intelligence, professionalism and trustworthiness. This explains why many employers encourage applicants to dress professionally during interviews and why schools often enforce dress codes.
“You don’t need expensive clothes to make a good first impression.” This was the opinion of Mrs. Hikmat Oriloye, a nurse, who believes that cleanliness and decency matter more than fashion trends. She explained that patients and their families often feel more comfortable when healthcare professionals appear neat and well-presented.
According to her, dressing appropriately builds confidence, creates reassurance, and demonstrates respect for both oneself and others. She emphasised that confidence begins with feeling comfortable in what you wear rather than trying to impress people with expensive clothing.
Fashion also serves as a form of non-verbal communication. People’s clothing choices can reveal aspects of their personality, lifestyle, values, and even mood. Colours, styles and accessories all contribute to the message a person sends. Dark colours are often associated with confidence and authority, while brighter colours may suggest creativity, friendliness and enthusiasm.
Although these perceptions vary across cultures, appearance remains one of the strongest elements of first impressions.
“The way you present yourself can spark interest before a conversation even begins.” This was the opinion of Mr. Jimoh Agboola, a businessman, who believes fashion plays an important role in relationships and dating.
According to him, people naturally notice appearance before they get to know someone’s personality. He explained that dressing neatly and appropriately shows self-respect, maturity and confidence, qualities that many people find attractive in a potential partner. However, he added that while fashion may attract someone’s attention initially, honesty, respect and good character are what sustain a healthy and lasting relationship.
Researchers have also found that clothing influences not only how others perceive us but also how we perceive ourselves. This concept, known as enclothed cognition, suggests that wearing appropriate clothing can improve confidence and performance. People who feel good about their appearance often communicate more effectively, maintain better eye contact and display greater self-assurance.
Despite the importance of fashion, appearance alone cannot define an individual. Qualities such as honesty, kindness, intelligence, humility and good communication remain essential for building lasting relationships and achieving long-term success. Attractive clothing may create a positive first impression, but character is what leaves a lasting impact. It is therefore important not to judge people solely by their appearance, as clothing choices may be influenced by culture, financial circumstances or personal preference.
Fashion continues to play a significant role in shaping first impressions because it communicates confidence, personality, and professionalism before words are spoken.
However, true respect is earned through integrity, behaviour and character. While dressing well can open doors, it is ultimately one’s actions and values that determine how lasting those first impressions become.
