From the corridors of national policy to the celebration of a life dedicated to knowledge and service, Ondo State Governor, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, had a week that captured the essence of leadership in action.
It was a period defined by strategic engagement, shared responsibility and a tribute to enduring excellence, championing initiatives aimed at transforming lives while honouring a scholar whose influence has continued to shape generations.
The week assumed national significance on Thursday as Aiyedatiwa represented the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, at the presidential launch of the NG-CARES Additional Financing, SOLID and HOPE programmes.
The occasion also served as a united declaration by Nigeria’s 36 governors, who reaffirmed their commitment to working with the Federal Government, the World Bank and other development partners to ensure the successful implementation of the programmes.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Aiyedatiwa described the launch as another important milestone in translating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda into tangible benefits for Nigerians.
He emphasised that the programmes were founded on the conviction that economic reforms must go beyond policy pronouncements to create opportunities, strengthen institutions, improve public services and deliver greater prosperity for citizens.
According to the governors, the NG-CARES Additional Financing, SOLID and HOPE programmes provide practical investments aimed at strengthening governance, protecting vulnerable households, developing human capital and improving the resilience of states.
Aiyedatiwa also conveyed the appreciation of the governors to the World Bank for sustaining a partnership that has strengthened public financial management across states, expanded social protection programmes, supported agricultural productivity and built institutional systems capable of delivering measurable and accountable results.
The governors maintained that the NG-CARES initiative had demonstrated what could be achieved through a common commitment to accountability among the Federal Government, state governments and development partners.
They stressed that the programmes were not simply new interventions but deliberate investments in stronger institutions, improved service delivery, sound public financial management and sustainable development.
Reaffirming their collective resolve, the governors pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government, the World Bank and other partners to ensure the programmes achieved their intended objectives, while strengthening governance, accountability and measurable service delivery across the federation.
They also commended President Tinubu for sustaining reforms centred on collaboration, institutional strengthening and citizens’ welfare, and expressed appreciation to the World Bank for its enduring confidence in Nigeria.
As the curtain gradually fell on the week’s national engagement, attention shifted to a celebration that transcended age and ceremony.
On Saturday, Aiyedatiwa joined eminent personalities at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome), Akure, to celebrate the 80th birthday of Professor Olusola Aderounmu, paying tribute to a man he described as an accomplished scholar, educationist, community leader and politician whose influence has shaped generations.
For the governor, the occasion was also a personal reunion with a mentor. He recalled meeting Professor Aderounmu as his lecturer in Education Administration at the Lagos State College of Education, where the renowned academic distinguished himself through scholarship and authorship.
Aiyedatiwa recounted discovering later that the respected lecturer hailed from Ondo State, a revelation that strengthened the bond he shared with students from the state through the encouragement and support they consistently received.
Their relationship later evolved beyond the classroom after both returned to Ondo State and became active in partisan politics, where Professor Aderounmu emerged as one of the state’s respected political leaders.
The governor described the octogenarian’s record of scholarship, public service and unwavering commitment to nation-building as a legacy that has earned him a distinguished place in the history of Ondo State and Nigeria.
He acknowledged Professor Aderounmu’s immense contributions to education and human capital development, noting that he had mentored generations of leaders whose impact continues to resonate across different sectors.
Aiyedatiwa also reflected on the celebrant’s remarks during a June 12 programme, describing his reflections on Nigeria’s political history and his counsel as invaluable.
Expressing gratitude for the guidance he had received from Professor Aderounmu as both his former lecturer and political leader, the governor prayed for his continued good health, peace, strength and many more years of service to humanity.
The celebration also attracted tributes from former students, including professors and technocrats, as well as other stakeholders who acknowledged the celebrant’s enduring contributions to education, institutions and society.
From advancing national reforms alongside fellow governors to honouring a teacher whose legacy continues to shape lives, Aiyedatiwa’s engagements during the week reflected leadership that sought to build stronger institutions while recognising those whose service has stood the test of time.
