From Segun Fagbemi, Ilorin

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has approved the appointment of Prof. Sikiru Abayomi Biliaminu as the Acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin.

The appointment, which took effect on June 19, 2026, was conveyed in an internal memorandum signed by the hospital’s Director of Administration, Dr. A. F. Agbana.

In the memorandum, Agbana congratulated Prof. Biliaminu on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to provide effective leadership for the institution.

He also urged members of staff to give the Acting CMD their full cooperation and support to ensure a conducive working environment and enable him to discharge his responsibilities successfully.

Prof. Biliaminu, a Professor of Chemical Pathology and Consultant Chemical Pathologist, brings more than three decades of experience in clinical medicine, medical education, biomedical research and healthcare administration to the position.

He is also a Clinical Embryologist with recognised expertise in Chemical Pathology, Endocrinology and Assisted Reproductive Medicine.

A graduate of the University of Ilorin, where he obtained his MBBS degree in 1995, Prof. Biliaminu became a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Chemical Pathology in 2009.

He further specialised in Clinical Embryology, earning professional certifications from Apollo Hospital and the Chennai Fertility Centre and Research Institute, India, in 2011.

At the University of Ilorin, he serves as Professor of Chemical Pathology in the Department of Chemical Pathology and Immunology, College of Health Sciences. He has held several academic leadership positions, including Acting Head of Department and Departmental Postgraduate Coordinator, while making significant contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

Within UITH, Prof. Biliaminu currently serves as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC). He previously served as Deputy Chairman (Clinical), Acting CMAC and Acting Chief Medical Director on several occasions.

His administrative experience has been marked by efforts to strengthen clinical governance, improve healthcare quality and enhance institutional performance.

An accomplished researcher, Prof. Biliaminu has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in local and international journals.

His research focuses on endocrinology, assisted reproductive medicine, clinical chemistry, laboratory medicine, diabetes, infertility, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases.

He has also supervised numerous postgraduate research projects and fellowship dissertations, while serving as an accreditation panel member and resource person for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

His contributions to medicine and healthcare administration have earned him several honours, including the Dr. Alexander Eyimofe Boyo Best Candidate Award in the Fellowship Examination in Chemical Pathology and a Management Board Letter of Commendation from UITH for his leadership and commitment to laboratory development and equipment management.

Prof. Biliaminu assumed office as Acting Chief Medical Director on June 19, 2026, and is expected to provide strategic leadership for one of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary healthcare institutions.
