Marriage is often described as a union built on love, trust and commitment. While love is considered an important foundation for a lasting relationship, many believe that other factors, such as communication, understanding, respect and financial stability, also play vital roles. WEEKEND HOPE spoke with some individuals on whether marriage can survive on love alone .Excerpts:

Love alone cannot guarantee a successful marriage in this century. Although love is an important foundation, marriage also requires trust, effective communication, respect, commitment, patience, understanding and a sense of responsibility.
There is a popular saying, “love is sweet when there is money,” which also highlights the importance of financial stability in marriage. Both partners must be willing to contribute, support each other and make mutual efforts to keep the relationship strong. Love may bring two people together, but it is the continuous effort of both partners that helps sustain the marriage.

I personally do not believe love alone is enough to make a marriage successful. Love may be the starting point, but a marriage also needs trust, good communication, mutual respect, understanding, commitment, patience and financial responsibility.
Couples must also be willing to grow together and handle disagreements maturely. As the Bible says in Amos 3:3, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Love may bring two people together, but agreement, commitment and intentional effort are what help them remain together, particularly when challenges arise.

My answer is no. There are certain stages and challenges in marriage where love alone may not be enough to resolve problems. For example, if one partner has habits that consistently affect the other person, such as poor personal hygiene, the issue cannot simply be ignored because of love. There must be honest communication and a willingness to make necessary changes. If such problems are continually overlooked, they can lead to frustration, misunderstanding and eventually create emotional distance between the partners. This is why marriage requires more than feelings; it requires understanding, communication and a willingness to improve.

No. Love alone is not enough. Love may be the reason two people decided to get married, but it cannot single-handedly sustain the marriage. Love can make the good moments enjoyable, but compatibility, patience and perseverance are especially important during difficult periods.
Couples may love each other deeply and still disagree about money, raising children, religion, where to live or how to handle conflicts. Marriage also comes with practical responsibilities such as paying bills, sharing household duties, managing careers and dealing with extended family.
These challenges do not disappear simply because two people love each other. A successful marriage, therefore, requires love alongside understanding, cooperation, communication, responsibility and continuous effort from both partners.

Love is important in marriage, but love alone is not enough to make a marriage successful. Without love, a marriage may lose its meaning, but when love is the only thing holding it together, the relationship may struggle over time.
A successful marriage requires faithfulness, honesty, trust, understanding, good communication, commitment and financial responsibility.
Money is also important because marriage comes with responsibilities and needs that must be met. Love may bring two people together, but trust, understanding, commitment and financial stability are what will keep it.

For any marriage to be successful, both parties need to be intentional and willing to make sacrifices to make it work.
Love alone is not enough. Every successful marriage may have faced moments when it could have crashed or hit the rocks, but through love, sacrifice, concerted effort, perseverance, understanding, and many other factors, couples are often able to make it work
Love is the fuel and oil that keeps the marriage vehicle moving. But let’s not forget that a vehicle needs more than just fuel and oil to keep moving.

Ordinary love alone cannot sustain a marriage because there are different forms of love, and some relationships may lack honesty and openness.
For love to contribute to a successful marriage, it must be genuine and supported by honesty, clear communication, mutual respect, commitment, patience, forgiveness and understanding. Both partners must be willing to make time for each other, nurture the relationship and work through disagreements rather than giving up when challenges arise.
Respect is one of the major foundations of a lasting marriage, and it must be mutual. Marriage is not about finding perfect partners; it is about two people making a daily commitment to understand, support and respect each other while putting effort into the relationship.

I don’t think love alone is enough to make a marriage successful. Love is an important foundation, but a lasting marriage also requires trust, communication, respect, honesty, understanding, commitment, patience and effort from both partners.
Two people can love each other deeply and still face difficulties if they cannot communicate properly, respect each other or take responsibility for their actions. Marriage comes with disagreements, financial challenges, family issues and other responsibilities. Both partners must, therefore, be willing to support each other, learn from their mistakes and work through challenges together. Love may bring two people together, but commitment, mutual respect, communication and consistent effort are what help keep them together.
