Artificial Intelligence(AI) has become increasingly common in education, with students using AI tools to research, generate ideas and complete academic tasks. While some believe AI can enhance learning and productivity, others argue that excessive reliance on it could encourage academic dishonesty and reduce critical thinking.
Wuraola Idowu & Fiyinfolu Samuel of WEEKEND HOPE spoke with people on whether students should be allowed to use AI tools for academic work and how such use should be regulated.
Excerpts:

Students should not rely completely on AI for academic work because it can discourage independent thinking and reduce their ability to learn. Although AI can be helpful like other learning tools, students should use it only as a guide and not as a replacement for their own knowledge

Students should be allowed to use AI because the world is advancing, and we need to follow suit.
Disallowing them means leaving them behind compared to their peers globally where AI is already trending. They would lack vital information.
AI offers so many benefits. It removes unnecessary stress and makes the academic journey faster, easier and more convenient. Ultimately, it enables students to compete on a global scale. AI is a welcome development.

AI can be a useful tool for students if it is used responsibly. It can help explain difficult topics, support research and generate ideas for assignments.
However, students should not rely on it to do all their academic work because that can encourage cheating and reduce their ability to think independently. Since AI is becoming part of many careers, students should learn to use it wisely and ethically.

Funmilayo Olawole
Yes, students should be allowed to use AI tools for academic work because these tools can help them research, learn, organise ideas and improve their understanding of complex topics. However, AI should be used responsibly and not as a means of plagiarism.
Students should not copy and submit AI-generated content as their own work. Instead, they should use AI as a support tool while contributing their own creativity, critical thinking, personal experiences and original ideas.
When used ethically, AI can enhance learning, encourage innovation and help students develop skills that are relevant

Olakunle Fasan
Students’ excessive dependence on AI and online search tools has weakened their reading culture and study habits. While technology has become necessary for schoolwork, overreliance on it can make students less serious about learning and negatively affect their academic development.

Yes, students should be allowed to use AI for academic work, but responsibly and ethically.
AI can be a valuable learning tool. It helps students understand difficult concepts, organise ideas, improve grammar and writing, conduct preliminary research and receive instant feedback. When used properly, it enhances learning, rather than replacing it.

Students should be allowed to use AI tools for academic work, but they should not depend on them completely. If they are struggling with an assignment or do not know how to begin, they can use AI to get ideas or guidance. After that, they should develop the work themselves so that they can understand the topic and improve their own knowledge and skills.

Iyanuoluwa Fasalejo
Students should be allowed to use AI for academic work, but there should be clear regulations. AI should only be used to improve or refine students’ original ideas rather than completing assignments for them, to prevent overdependence and encourage critical thinking.
