Corpses outside hospital are accident victims – Ikuomola

By Kemi Olatunde

The need for collaboration between government agencies and security operatives has been stressed to prevent outbreak of diseases at the Ore General Hospital, Ondo State.
Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Niran Ikuomola spoke while speaking with The Hope in reaction to a publication by a national newspaper on the state of the hospital’s mortuary yesterday in Akure.
The publication berated the poor state of the morgue noting that it could lead to outbreak of diseases in area.
According to the Permanent Secretary, most of the corpses are abandoned corpses resulting from road accident or crime and which are mostly dumped by security operatives.
He noted that the state embarked on mass burial of abandoned corpses almost a year ago and added that it is not the normal practice of the facility to illegally dump corpses within the premises of the morgue.
His words; “the corpses found outside will properly be due to the number of abandoned corpses dumped by security personnel resulting from accident or crime along the Lagos-Benin express way.”
He attributed the poor state of the morgue to its renovation for expansion and added “the small mortuary which is being used is not sufficient to accommodate the volume of corpses being dump there.”
However, he assured that necessary action will be taken to prevent future occurrence of such nature and also prevent disease outbreak in the state.
