The major opposition political parties in Ondo State have expressed their satisfactions with the recent adoption of June 12 as a Democracy Day by the House of Representatives.
Speaking with The Hope, the Southwest Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Ayo Fadaka, described the adoption of June 12 as Democracy Day as a good development that Nigerians have been expecting
His words: “It is better as a good development when looking back at the situation where the struggle for democracy in Nigeria began from.
It would be recalled that the legislative work titled: “A bill for an Act to amend the Public Holidays Act, Cap. P40 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, was co-sponsored by Hon. Edward Pwajok (Plateau, APC) and Kayode Oladele (Ogun, APC) and adopted at last Thursday plenary.
It was designed to amend the Act in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as a Democracy Day on June 6, 2018.
Fadaka described the annulment of June 12 election as the day that can never be forgotten in the history of Nigeria democracy before the handing over of power to civilian government by military rule in May 29, 1999 after a lot of struggles by Nigerians.
On his part, the State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Korede Duyile, said that June 12 which will henceforth become public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day celebration is a preferred day.
Duyile described the initial May 29 every year as inappropriate for the commemoration of Democracy Day in the country.
His words” June 12 is right. The initial date of May 29 is inappropriate. June 12 is a better day and we are satisfied with it”
