A 29-year-old man, Samuel Balogun, has appeared before an Akure Magistrate Court, for allegedly assaulting two police officers.

The defendant, a.k.a container, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

The prosecuting counsel, I.O. Osobu, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offences on January 18, 2024, at about 9 am at Ifira Akoko, Ondo State.

Osobu said the defendant and his accomplice assaulted two police officers who were deployed to invite him for questioning on an allegation.

Balogun was alleged to have assaulted one CPL Igodi Emmanuel and Inspector Suleiman Yakubu, while performing their lawful duties.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, were punishable under Sections 516, 356(2) of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. And in view of his not-guilty plea, the prosecutor prayed for a date to enable him open the case for trial and gather the prosecution witnesses.

Defence counsel, O.A. Olahanmi, applied for the bail of his client on liberal terms.

The prosecutor opposed the application of the defence counsel, on grounds that if the defendant was granted bail, he would intimidate the prosecution witnesses in the case and jump bail due to his antecedent.

Osobu added that the defendant is a serial offender who had been on the wanted list of the police for an offence previously committed.

The Magistrate, O.W. Dosunmi, adjourned the case till March 27, for the consideration of the defendant’s bail.

Dosunmi, therefore, ordered the remand of the defendant at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID).
