The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ondo, Ogun, Oyo and Osun states chapters have demanded the immediate reversal of the recent increase in fuel pump price, electricity tariff, bank charges and other increments recently made in the country.
The group, which trooped out in their numbers yesterday at the various states capitals, bore placards with various inscriptions such as “NANS says no to inhumane policy”, “No to PMS pump price” and “PMB the people are hungry”.
Speaking with The Hope, the Publicity and Media Director, NANS Joint Campus Committee Ondo State Axis, Comrade Akinkuowo Fisayomi said the recent increments are not meant for the good of the students and Nigerians in general.
He also said that NANS demands safe reopening of schools as leaders of tomorrow are being kept at home.
“It is pure evil and anti student policy. We demand total reversal, enabling environment for reopening of schools and provision of all that is required to safely reopen schools.
“It is sardonic to see hotels, clubs, bars and campaign grounds open for electoral activities but leaders of tomorrow are kept at home”, he said.
Reports from Osogbo said the Student body in Osogbo protested against incessant bank charges, hike in PMS pump price, cable network charges, and electricity tariff.
The students who were armed with placards started the protest at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park and terminated it at Ola-iya junction in Osogbo.
The protesters who were chanting anti-government songs had inscription like “We condemn the insensitivity of Buhari-led government to tackle current hardship faced by Nigerians” “Palliatives, not inflation!, NANS say no to…on their placards.
The Revolution Now movement who were also students from various institutions joined the protest in order to express their views about the hikes.
It will be recalled that the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, had earlier announced an increment in the pump price of petrol to N151.56 per litre.
While addressing newsmen, a RevolutionNow representative, Kola Ibrahim said the aim of the protest was to resist all anti-people policy of the government and its surrogates across the states.
He stated that it is for this basis that the Nigerian students have risen to say no to all anti-people policies, no to capitalist policies.
