‘Stop defacing Osun with refuse’

Residents of Osun state have been urged to change their attitude to indiscriminate dumping of refuse defacing the beauty of the state and causing health hazard to the general populace.

The Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mr Sola Oladepo stated this while addressing Private Sector Partners (PSP) service providers on refuse collection and waste management in his office in Osogbo.

He said the state government will soon establish an enforcement agency that will assist in the implementation of government policies and programmes aimed at promoting waste management.

Oladepo encouraged the people to cultivate the habit of cleanliness, which is next to godliness.

He described the administration of Governor Gboyega Oyetola as a unique and pragmatic administration who will ensure all within his power to see to neatness of the state for the betterment of the people.

According to him, the governor recently released funds for the repairs of waste disposal trucks that are now back on the road and operational.

He said government is considering the possibility of putting up a scheme that will assist PSP to access facilities that will ease the problem of mobility of the waste disposal by the PSP operators.

On his part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Sanitation, Mr Rufus Oyegbile asserted that the state government will do all within its power to provide necessary equipment and enabling environment required for the PSP operators working in the state.

Speaking earlier, the spokesperson of the PSP operators in the state, Mr Salmon Akano called on the government to put in place functional waste disposal trucks that would make their works easy.

He also highlighted some challenges facing the group in the dispense of their duties as unwillingness to pay for services rendered by the people, lack of enforcement laws on environmental sanitation and called for more dumping sites in the state.
