The Ondo State House of Assembly said its attention has been drawn to news making the rounds that the Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun and some members of the House were invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
In a statement signed by the Chairman House Committee on Information, Youth and Sports Development, Mr Olubenga Omole, the House stated unequivocally that the news was nothing but a ruse calculated at bringing the name and integrity of the House into a disrepute.
“The Speaker, Oleyelogun at the weekend attended the Speakers’ conference in Bauchi and presently in Abuja. And he is back in Akure.
“For the records, the Honourable Members being invited for questioning are Members of a House Committee and by constitution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as an antigraft agency has the right to invite any citizen for questioning at anytime.
“For the umpteenth time, the House wishes to state clearly that Chairman of the said Committee requested for a sum of money to attend a seminar sometime in December 2019 but approval for the fund came in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and since the Members could not attend the seminar, the money was returned to the treasury”, the statement read .
Omole càlled on journalists to verify their facts appropriately before publishing in order to sustain the integrity of the pen profession.
