The National Secretary of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Comrade Yahaya Makama, has assured that the state congress and primary election of the party that will hold Wednesday (today) in Ondo state will witness huge success.

This, he said will put the party above others ahead of the November governorship election.

He gave the assurance in an interview with The Hope yesterday.

Makama, who is in the state to oversee the exercises, said the party’s candidate will be picked through the consensus mode of election.

“With the preparation ahead of the primary, the ZLP is good to go in conducting free and fair primary.

“Apparently, I’m in Ondo state to oversee and witness both the state congress and the primary election of our party to ensure a candidate emerges.”

The National Secretary averred that the party decided to present Dr. Abass Mimiko as the only aspirant for the primary, having done its in-house screening to avoid crises attributed to primary elections in other political parties.

According to him, “There are a lot of aspirants who indicated interest to contest under the platform of ZLP, but we screened them out internally because we cannot conduct a primary that will disappoint the people of the state. That is the reason for presenting one aspirant for today’s primary.

“As regards tomorrow’s primary (today), someone called me and showed interest to participate in the exercise as an aspirant. I said no way.”

Makama, who maintained that the next governor can emerge from any part of the state regardless of religion or zone, said that zoning will cause a setback in creating disunity among the people of the state.

“The next governor can come from any part of the state, and our party has not done anything wrong, just as it has the constitutional right to pick its candidate from any part of the state,” he said.”
