The Chairman of the Kano State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA),
Ali Abdurrahman, has disclosed that approximately 15,000 medical doctors have
left Nigeria as of 2024 due to inadequate remuneration.
Abdurrahman made this announcement during a media conference, where he
addressed pressing issues facing doctors in the state.
Speaking to the press to commemorate this year’s Physician’s Week, themed
‘Ensuring Universal Applicability in Remuneration: A Panacea to Talent
Retention in the Healthcare System,’ he stressed that doctors deserve fair pay
and recognition of their contributions.
“Fair remuneration is more than just a salary figure; it reflects our value. It
serves as a motivator for excellence and a safeguard against burnout,
particularly in the healthcare sector. Adequate compensation acknowledges the
time, emotional energy, and personal commitment healthcare professionals
invest,” he said.
He added, “When healthcare workers are fairly and equitably respected, it fuels
their dedication, strengthens their commitment to patient care, and fortifies
the broader health ecosystem.”
Abdurrahman also called on the Kano State government to fulfil the agreement
signed with the NMA regarding the revised hazard allowance for health workers.
