IWD: Rise above past pains, build better future – Kaffy urges young women
Award-winning choreographer Kafayat Shafau-Ameh, popularly known as Kaffy, has encouraged young women to focus on the future rather than dwell on past pains, stressing that the next generation has a responsibility to build a better world.
Speaking during activities marking International Women’s Day, the renowned dancer said young girls must rise above past disappointments and work towards becoming better versions of themselves.
“It’s not about the past or the pains of the past. It’s about now. You are our future, and I want you to be better than us,” she said.
Kaffy further advised women and girls to prioritise knowledge, emotional healing and courage in order to thrive.
According to her, “Be informed, empower your mind, heal your heart and be audacious. Above all, be authentic and fearless. Keep moving.”
The 45-year-old Guinness World Record holder also urged women to embrace their true identity and focus on personal growth instead of seeking validation from others.
Speaking with Channels Television at a Wema Bank event organised to commemorate International Women’s Day, she said real transformation begins when individuals remain true to who they are.
Kaffy explained that while women have the capacity to transform their environment, they must not lose themselves in the process.
“Transformation is my watchword. Transform your environment, but do not sacrifice who you are for it. I once did that and had to rediscover myself.
“Use who you are to transform yourself, and the world around you will naturally change. You don’t need to perform for approval or validation from anyone,” she said.
She also acknowledged the challenges many women face, including the absence of guidance from those expected to mentor them.
However, the dancer reassured young girls that many women are still learning and finding their paths, urging them to remain open to mentorship and understanding.
“When you find even a single opportunity where a woman can pour into you, receive it.
“Forgive your mother and other women who may not have been able to show up for you because they too are trying to survive,” she added.
International Women’s Day is celebrated globally to recognise women’s achievements and promote gender equality and empowerment, while encouraging mentorship and opportunities for women and girls
