The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists to exercise discipline and responsibility to curb road crashes during the festive period.
Speaking at the launch of 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign , the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, stressed that road safety begins with individual discipline, emphasising the dangers of risky behaviours such as mobile phone use while driving.
“Safety is a collective duty. Every driver, passenger, and pedestrian must play their part in reducing road traffic crashes,” he stated.
Mohammed reiterated that the theme of the 2025 ember months campaign reinforces the fact that human factors remain one of the major causes of road crashes.
He noted that drivers are largely responsible for most accidents recorded on the highways.
Citing statistics from Operation Zero 2024, conducted between December 15, 2024 and January 15, 2025, he revealed that 432 persons lost their lives and 2,070 sustained injuries from 533 reported road traffic crashes during the period.
According to him, the leading causes of these accidents included driver fatigue, overloading of passengers, conveyance of people in haulage vehicles, and transporting fuel in plastic containers.
“This clearly shows that drivers’ behaviour is a fundamental element in determining safety on our highways. Therefore, the choice of the 2025 End-of-Year campaign theme was deliberate and well thought-out,” Mohammed explained.
He added that the theme was designed to address traffic infractions by drivers, which had been largely responsible for previous crash records.
In line with this commitment, Mohammed announced that the FRSC has outlined comprehensive, actionable measures to ensure hitch-free motoring during and after the Christmas and New Year celebrations
