The Osun State chapter of the African Action Congress, AAC, has expressed concern over what it described as worsening insecurity and rising political tension ahead of the August 15 governorship election, accusing the Osun State Police Command of bias and demanding the immediate redeployment of the Commissioner of Police.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Akinlade Semiu Babatunde, the AAC alleged that political thuggery and intimidation were on the increase across the state, creating fear among residents and raising concerns about the credibility of the electoral process.
The party cited Monday’s incident at the Old Garage area of Osogbo, where armed men reportedly attempted to take over the motor park, causing panic among traders, transport workers and residents.
The AAC stressed that the incident reflected growing political impunity and was allegedly perpetrated by individuals loyal to a political party, although it did not provide evidence to support the allegation.
The opposition party further accused the Osun State Police Command of partisanship, alleging that the command had failed to act impartially in handling politically related security matters.
It said, “We therefore demand, in the interest of democracy and public safety, that the Inspector General of Police immediately redeploys the current Commissioner of Police in Osun State. He has lost the confidence of the people.”
