Nigeria’s political landscape was thrown into mourning on Friday following the passing of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, at the age of 96.

The nonagenarian, a staunch advocate of true federalism and a lifelong disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, died peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, in the early hours of Friday, February 14.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in his condolence message, described Adebanjo as a fearless patriot who fought relentlessly for democracy, justice, and good governance.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a statesman who devoted his life to the service of the people and the progress of our nation.

“Pa Adebanjo’s unwavering commitment to justice and true federalism helped shape Nigeria’s political landscape. His legacy of advocacy and selfless service will continue to inspire future generations, “Aiyedatiwa said.

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, confirmed the passing of its leader, describing him as an irreplaceable icon whose contributions to Nigeria’s democracy were immeasurable.

In a statement, the Secretary-General of Afenifere, Sola Ebiseni, said Adebanjo remained steadfast in his fight against oppression and injustice until his final breath.

“For about a decade, Baba reminded us that he was at the ‘departure lounge,’ but his passion for a restructured Nigeria never faded. He was a fearless advocate of justice and equity, and we will not relent in continuing his fight for a better nation,” Ebiseni stated.

He added that Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, would coordinate further engagements with Adebanjo’s immediate family regarding funeral arrangements.

Meanwhile, the Adebanjo family, in an official statement, said the nationalist passed on peacefully after a lifetime of selfless service to the country.

“With a heart full of gratitude for a life well spent in service to God, the nation, and humanity, we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo.”

“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos home at the age of 96. The foremost nationalist, elder statesman, distinguished lawyer, and tireless advocate of true federalism dedicated his entire life to the pursuit of justice, equity, and a progressive Nigeria.

“He is survived by his 94-year old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren,” the family said.

They further disclosed that consultations were ongoing with Adebanjo’s associates and key interest groups across Nigeria to finalise burial arrangements.

A condolence register has been opened at his Lagos residence, No 8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
