As the fuel scarcity is fading out in Akure, the Ondo state capital, residents of Akoko in the northern senatorial district were still lamenting the hardship experienced in the area as a result of the fuel scarcity.
Roads in Ikare, Ugbe and Arigidi were said to be almost deserted as fuel scarcity and hike were biting harder.
Findings by The Hope confirmed that many filling stations in Akoko were not selling the product while few selling it now charge between N200 and N250 per litre.
This development has led to hike in both intercity and inter states transport fare thereby affecting socio-economic activities of Akokoland.
Similarly, commercial motorcycles called okada now charge N150 or N200 against the former N100 per drop.
An okada rider, Ojo Ibrahim, attributed the fare hike to high price of fuel and scarcity of the product.
An Ikare Akoko resident, Mr Oye Ajileye condemned the scarcity and hike since the oil sector is the driver the country’s economy, saying the development will actually affect the nation’s economy negatively..
Ajileye urged government to be sincere if they want to increase the price of the commodity instead of allowing dealers to be selling it indiscriminately.
