Sunshine Stars FC assistant coach, Olarewaju Ale, has praised his players for their discipline and strict adherence to tactical instructions, highlighting their determination throughout the encounter.
He noted that although the team created several scoring opportunities, they were unable to convert more of their chances.
Nevertheless, he emphasised that the squad, under the guidance of head coach Duke Udi, remains focused on securing positive results.
Ale made these remarks following Sunshine Stars’ impressive 2–1 away victory over Gateway FC in their Nigeria National League (NNL) Conference A Matchday 16 fixture at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Sunshine Stars asserted their dominance early, with Ugochukwu Lawrence opening the scoring in the 23rd minute. Matthew Samuel doubled the lead in the 36th minute, giving the visitors a comfortable advantage going into the interval.
Gateway FC responded with greater intensity in the second half and managed to pull a goal back. However, Sunshine Stars goalkeeper Okanlawon Laide delivered a standout performance, making several crucial saves to deny the hosts any opportunity of a comeback.
Looking ahead to their final league fixture against Edel FC in Akure, Coach Ale stated that the team will return home to reassess and prepare thoroughly for the decisive encounter.
Edel FC had earlier secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Sunshine Stars in their first meeting of the season. The return fixture will take place at the Akure Sports Complex next Saturday, in what promises to be a crucial season finale.
