Arsenal delivered a resounding statement of intent ahead of the new Premier League season as they swept aside Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield in Cardiff.
The reigning holders stunned City after just 23 seconds when Myles Lewis-Skelly produced a sublime pass to release Riccardo Calafiori, who kept his composure to coolly fire Arsenal into an early lead.
It was the worst possible start to the post-Pep Guardiola era for City and new boss Enzo Maresca, whose side struggled to cope with Arsenal’s intensity and attacking movement.
Arsenal doubled their advantage through Kai Havertz, with £34 million summer signing Christos Tzolis creating the opening. Tzolis headed across goal and Havertz’s effort found its way through goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italy international endured a difficult afternoon and was beaten again three minutes after half-time when Tzolis turned provider once more, finding Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who calmly tucked away the third.
Donnarumma was left wrong-footed and sat down by Odegaard as Arsenal’s dominance continued.
City could have been further behind before the interval.
Donnarumma spilled the ball, allowing Odegaard to shoot, only for Josko Gvardiol to clear the effort off the line.
Returning forward Bukayo Saka also passed up two promising opportunities to add to Arsenal’s advantage.
While City’s defence looked disjointed, Arsenal’s backline provided a display of resilience that will have pleased Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners had conceded eight goals in four pre-season matches, prompting questions over their defensive solidity, but they were determined to keep a clean sheet against one of the Premier League’s most potent attacks.
That resolve was evident late in the game when David Raya saved from Erling Haaland.
Lewis-Skelly reacted quickest to the rebound before Ben White threw himself in front of a Jeremy Doku effort to preserve Arsenal’s three-goal cushion.
City’s afternoon was summed up by the withdrawal of Haaland and £116 million signing Elliot Anderson after both struggled to make an impact. The absence of Rodri, meanwhile, was keenly felt as City failed to establish control in midfield.
For Maresca, the result underlined the scale of the challenge facing him as he attempts to reshape a side that dominated English football during Guardiola’s decade in charge.
For Arteta, it was a hugely encouraging start to the campaign.
Winning the Community Shield is no guarantee of subsequent league success, but there is a notable precedent.
Manchester City won the curtain-raiser in 2018/19 before going on to claim the Premier League title as part of a domestic treble.
Arsenal will hope Sunday’s emphatic victory can provide a similar launchpad as they pursue back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in 91 years.
After a 3-0 victory that exposed City’s vulnerabilities while highlighting Arsenal’s strength, the Gunners have made their ambitions unmistakably clear.
