An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of a teenager, Kayode Seun and one Godwin Festus, in the Ado Correctional Centre, over alleged fraud and cyber crime.

The I9-year-old Seun and Festus, 22, who are residents of Ikere-Ekiti, are standing trial over alleged conspiracy, fraud, cyber crime, possession of car and bribery.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 22 at 10:30 a.m in Ikere-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendants were involved in conspiracy, fraud, cyber crime and possession of one Mercedes Benz CLA car, reasonably suspected to be stolen.

Oriyomi said the defendants also tried to offer N485,000 bribe to police officers.

According to him, the offences are punishable under Sections 8 and 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act 2006, Sections 13 and 14 of the Cyber Crime Act 2015 and Sections 430 and 98A (b) of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendants in a correctional centre, while awaiting advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Counsel to the defendants, Iyanu Olumuagun, who earlier appeared for the defendants, however withdrew her appearances for reasons best known to her.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Olarewaju Owoleso, ordered the remand of the defendants in the correctional centre, pending issuance of advice.

He adjourned the case till June 6, 2024,  for mention.
