The Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI) has officially named its library after Professor William Olu Aderounmu in recognition of his significant contributions to the institution.
Professor Aderounmu served as the Provost of the defunct College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, from December 1986 to September 1995, before its transition into a university.
At the official naming ceremony, Vice-Chancellor of BOUESTI,Professor Olufemi Adeoluwa stated that the library previously had no formal name.
He highlighted Aderounmu’s pivotal role in transforming the college into a university by improving staff qualifications and raising academic standards.
“When we transitioned to a university, we needed qualified staff. He pushed for postgraduate studies and academic research despite resistance. His efforts laid the foundation for our institution’s success,” Adeoluwa said.
Under Aderounmu’s leadership, the university internally generated revenue to construct its largest structure, the library, without government funding.
He also initiated key academic programmes, including the NCE Sandwich Programme in an affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The university librarian, Dr (Mrs) S. R. Adekunmisi, described Aderounmu as a visionary leader whose foresight and commitment to education shaped the institution.
“As your wisdom and unwavering commitment to excellence are still needed, especially in this library that now bears your name, “This library will forever stand as a monument your vision, courage, and belief in the transformative power of education,” she said.
Deputy University Librarian, Mr Tayo Falade also expressed gratitude, emphasising Aderounmu’s role in laying the foundation for many of the university’s structures through internally generated funds.
He highlighted the former provost’s dedication to staff development and overall institutional growth.
Professor Aderounmu, deeply moved by the honour, expressed his gratitude and reflected on his resilience in leading the college for three terms, an unprecedented feat in the history of tertiary education in Nigeria.
He pledged N5 million for the extension of solar power to the library and an annual scholarship for the best graduating students in the university, particularly in Educational Management and Entrepreneurship Education.
His daughter, Mrs Temitope Adewumi, also expressed joy, emphasising the importance of honouring individuals while they are still alive.
“Hard work may not pay off immediately, but in the end, a good name speaks for itself,” she said.
The ceremony celebrated Professor Aderounmu’s lifelong dedication to education in Nigeria, ensuring that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
