Claim: Multiple online posts claim that Aliko Dangote has declared full support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.

Full Text

Peter Gregory Obi, the former governor of Anambra state, who contested in the 2023 presidential election in  Nigeria on the platform of the Labour Party. His candidacy gained widespread attention and popularity, especially among the youth of the federation who rallied behind him under the “Obi-dient” movement.

However, despite being considered as the underdog against the dominant political parties such as the All Progress Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Obi’s popularity surged through social media and grassroot mobilisation. He was seen by the youth and urban professionals as the one who can change the narrative of the Nigerian political landscape. However, he ultimately lost the election to the current president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Recently, a blog, Daily Excessive, claimed that the richest Nigerian and business tycoon, Aliko Dangote, declared support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, citing economic hardship under President Tinubu. The post can also be seen on Facebook here, and here. The Facebook post reads:

“BREAKING: Dangote Declares Full Support for Peter Obi in 2027, Cites Economic Hardship Under Tinubu”

“Billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has vowed to support Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, expressing deep frustration over the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“In a strongly worded statement, Dangote claimed that Tinubu’s leadership has severely affected his wealth and contributed to his rising blood pressure. He went further to say he is willing to give his all—”even my life if possible”—to ensure Obi’s victory.

“I will be the version of Elon Musk in this election. The economic hardship under Tinubu is unbearable,” Dangote reportedly stated.

Given the suspicion around the post and its relevance to Nigeria’s political landscape, we conducted this fact-check.

Verification

We used keywords search on Google to find if Aliko Dangote expressed support for Peter Obi towards the 2027 Presidential election in Nigeria. We found no credible source that reported that Dangote did anything related to it.

Also, we visited Obi’s official X and Facebook accounts and Dangote’s X and Facebook. No evidence of the claim was found.

In our previous fact-check, we mentioned that Daily Excessive is notorious for publishing falsified information to generate traffic and possibly phish visitor’s data.

Conclusion

The claim that Aliko Dangote has declared full support for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, citing economic hardship under President Tinubu, is FALSE. The claim emanated from a blog site notorious for spreading falsified information and possibly phishing visitors’ data. Analysis of credible news channels and Obi and Dangote’s social media accounts showed that such expression of interest did not come from Dangote to Obi towards the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.
