Omonitan Folake Rachael’s academic success at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, did not come by chance. Built on early discipline, faith and a deep belief in the power of education, her journey reflects the resilience of a young scholar who remained focused amid pressure and uncertainty. In this interview with Adeboye Ado, she speaks on her background, challenges, study habits and aspirations.

What is your name and can you share your background?

My name is Omonitan Folake Rachael. I come from the family of Mr and Mrs Omonitan and I currently reside in Ibadan.

I had my primary education at Prime Primary School, Wakajaye, Ibadan, before proceeding to Adelayo Academy, also in Ibadan, for my secondary education. From my early school years, I identified as a science student and developed a strong passion for learning. I understood early that education would play a vital role in shaping my future, so I cultivated discipline and seriousness toward my studies from a young age.

How do you feel about this achievement?

I feel profoundly grateful and thankful to God Almighty for this achievement. It represents the reward of years of consistency, patience and determination, supported by divine grace.

Beyond personal fulfilment, this accomplishment encourages me to continue striving for excellence and reminds me that dedication and faith can produce meaningful outcomes. I also see it as an opportunity to inspire others to remain committed to their goals despite challenges.

Can you give a brief overview of your academic journey and challenges?

My academic journey at Adekunle Ajasin University was characterised by steady growth and self discovery. Like many undergraduates, I had to adapt to the demands of university education, including time management, academic pressure and balancing multiple responsibilities.

There were moments of fatigue, emotional strain and self doubt, but those experiences taught me resilience and mental strength. I learned to stay disciplined, remain focused on my priorities and trust the process even when the journey felt overwhelming.

What study habits or routines helped you perform well?

Consistency was central to my academic success. I made it a habit to study daily instead of waiting until examination periods. I went beyond lecture notes to consult textbooks and online resources, ensuring I understood concepts thoroughly.

I set daily study goals, planned my activities ahead and remained attentive during lectures. Regular revision and practice of past questions helped me evaluate my understanding and improve steadily.

How did you balance academics with other responsibilities?

I consciously prioritised my academics because I believed they were the foundation for achieving my long term goals. I managed my time carefully, avoided unnecessary distractions and made deliberate choices about how I spent my time.

While I participated in other activities when necessary, I ensured my academic commitments were never compromised. This approach required discipline and sacrifice, but it helped me remain focused throughout my university years.

Were there people who played key roles in your success?

Yes, several individuals played crucial roles in my academic journey. I am grateful to my lecturers for their dedication and guidance, particularly Dr Ekun Oluwafemi Emmanuel and Dr Akerele, whose mentorship positively influenced my learning experience.

I also appreciate my family and mentors for their constant encouragement, prayers and moral support, especially during challenging periods.

What was your most difficult course or academic period and how did you overcome it?

Some courses were particularly demanding due to their depth and workload. I overcame these challenges by starting my preparations early, seeking clarification when necessary and practising consistently.

A notable experience was taking a computer science course on Python during my 200 level. At the time, it seemed unrelated to my health focused discipline, but I approached it with an open mind. That experience later sparked my interest in exploring the intersection between technology and healthcare.

What memorable experiences will you always cherish at AAUA?

I will always cherish moments of academic growth, the sense of fulfilment that came with completing difficult semesters and the relationships I built with lecturers and colleagues.

One of my fondest memories was the 100 level tutorial sessions, where we studied together, exchanged ideas and shared moments of laughter. Those interactions created a sense of belonging that made the university experience more enriching.

What advice would you give to students struggling academically?

I would advise students not to give up, regardless of how challenging things may appear. Seeking help early, staying consistent and focusing on understanding rather than comparison are important.

Everyone progresses at a different pace, and success comes through patience, discipline and perseverance.

How can the university further support academic excellence?

The university can enhance academic excellence by strengthening mentorship programmes, improving access to learning resources and fostering an environment where students feel comfortable seeking guidance.

A supportive academic structure goes a long way in motivating students to perform better.

What are your plans after graduation and how has AAUA prepared you for the future?

After graduation, I plan to further my studies and continue developing professionally in the medical field. My experience at Adekunle Ajasin University has equipped me with discipline, critical thinking and resilience. These qualities will guide me as I pursue higher academic and professional goals.
