India hemp possession: Police arraign two in Ekiti

Ekiti State Police command on Thursday arraigned two persons before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly being in possession of weed suspected to be India hemp.
The suspects whose names were Ajayi Kolapo (20) and Adetiba Ayomide (22), were arrested by the police at Itamo area of Ado-Ekiti after the duo had caused trouble in the area and breach the peace of residents of the area.
The prosecutor, Insp. Monica Ikebuilo, told the court that the accused persons are facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and possession of Indian hemp.
She alleged that the defendants had earlier conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace before some quality India hemp was found in their possession after they were arrested.
According to her, the offences contravened Section 249(d) and 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act.
The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment to enable her to study the case file and present her witnesses and evidence in court.
The defendants after listening to the chargs had pleaded not guilty.
Similarly, counsel to the accused persons, Mr Abiola Gboyega, urged the court to grant the defendants bail in most liberal term, with a promise that they would not jump.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adefumike Anoma, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety each in like sum.
Anoma adjourned the case until Aug.13 for hearing.
