An agricultural expert, Dr Jibayo Oyebade has advised government at all levels to maximise the agricultural potentials in the country.
Dr. Jibayo Oyebade who is the Director of Training and Research Institute, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, gave the advice in an interview with The Hope in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
Oyebade called for an enabling law to maximise agricultural potentials, saying there must be concerted efforts to map out sectorial distribution of what the people want to do.
His words: “This is different from poultry, the whole state can go into poultry with a specific design, but the whole state in the north can not go into poultry because even the cattle they are rearing, they are having problems when the dry season sets in, so they move out in search of grasses”.
” Everyone has a lot of areas with different natural endowment, so there must be a law to solidify the production of agricultural sector in the country”.
He said there should be specific guidelines to agricultural production which would have addressed challenges of the herdsmen being faced now.
According to him, agriculture, generally requires irrigation because rainy season is no longer timely as well as the sunshine which he said, brought about the need for a specific approach by zoning out the country into agricultural production sections either crops, arables or cattle farming to make it easier for the sector.
According to Oyebade, the country and Ondo state in particular supposed to dam its rivers as done in China, Holland and Israel which dammed river Galilee rather than allowing the water to run away.
“Our programmes require an agricultural conference, which is different from restructuring.
” Come up with what you think can be done properly in your zone, let us strategise and maximise the production technique in the zone. That will be a major setting, ” he declared.
He observed that Ondo state can identify crop production zones as he expressed the need for a concerted effort to sit down together and analyse the situation.
