The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has cautioned members of the public against circulating unverified allegations on social media, following a video posted on TikTok by Ms Ruth Ogunleye concerning the Commandant of the Academy, Major General OT Olatoye.
In the video, Ogunleye raised allegations against the Commandant in connection with an issue involving an Academy staff member, Mr Abubakar Isah.
The NDA, however, said the matter originated from an alleged social media infringement involving the staff member but was subsequently linked to the Commandant through what it described as false allegations and an attempt to defame his character.
The position of the Academy was contained in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Major Njoka Irabor.
The Academy acknowledged the right of individuals to express their views and seek redress over legitimate grievances, but stressed that such matters should be addressed through appropriate institutional and legal channels.
It warned that publishing unverified claims on social media could mislead the public and damage the reputation of individuals and institutions.
The NDA described itself as a premier military training institution committed to discipline, professionalism, integrity, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
According to the statement, complaints involving its personnel or activities are subject to established procedures and should be pursued through the appropriate channels.
The Academy maintained that the issues raised in the TikTok video should be subjected to due process rather than being determined through social media publications.
It further disclosed that it had commenced appropriate legal proceedings over the allegations, adding that it would allow the relevant authorities to determine the matter in accordance with the law.
The NDA reaffirmed its commitment to truth, professionalism, accountability and fairness, while stressing that it would continue to protect its institutional integrity and respect the rights of all parties to seek lawful redress.
