Towards reawakening reading culture among youths and preparing them for the future, a non-governmental organisation, OnetoOne Outreach, has organised a 21-day regimen for selected secondary schools in Akure, Ondo State capital.]
The project, which covered Alakure High School, Omoluorogbo Comprehensive High School, and Ijo Mimo High School, involved 150 students who were selected across the three schools.
Speaking with THE HOPE, the Project Coordinator, Elizabeth Paimo, said that the project was aimed at encouraging secondary school students to develop the habit of reading for pleasure and collaborating with education stakeholders to create a wholistic approach to promoting reading culture.
“The initiative also sought to introduce reading-focused activities into the school curriculum and implement reading challenges with rewards for achieving reading milestones,” she added.
In all the schools visited, all the participants were given pens and notepads as gifts, while those who distinguished themselves received certificates and books.
Likewise, the principals of schools that had no reading club approved the establishment of a reading club to continue from where the OnetoOne Outreach team stopped.
Talking about the next line of action, the Project Coordinator said, “Beyond boosting the reading culture of students in the schools visited, OnetoOne Outreach looks forward to impacting their lives to help them grow into wholesome adults, well-formed in all areas of life, and to support infrastructural development in the schools.
