The Ondo State Judiciary has been described as the cornerstone of the state’s development and a steadfast institution over the past five decades.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa stated this on Tuesday during a special court session at the Ondo State High Court in Akure, held as part of activities marking the state’s 50th anniversary.

Addressing the court, the governor said he was immensely honoured to participate in what he described as a “historic talk session”.

Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the contributions of those who laid the foundations of the state, saying their efforts ensured that future generations would inherit “an island of unity, peace, growth, progress and development”.

He paid glowing tribute to the state’s patriots and founding fathers, noting that their “foresight, vitality and spiritual education” made it possible to build a community of “special citizens”.

Reflecting on the journey so far, the governor stressed that the celebration was not merely about the passage of time, but a recognition of “five decades of resilience, determination, courage and faith” exhibited by the people of the state.

He noted that the judiciary had remained “the only unbroken institution in the last five decades”, underscoring its central role in upholding the rule of law, justice and equity.

Aiyedatiwa also described his personal experience with the judiciary as proof of its impartiality, saying it had positively shaped his life and demonstrated the principles of legality and fairness.

“As your governor, I represent living testimony of how an innocent individual can benefit from the rule of law and the impartiality of the judiciary,” he said.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to respecting and upholding judicial independence, describing the judiciary as “the creation and development of the nation’s truth”.

He added that his government would continue to strengthen judicial reforms, including plans to increase the number of judges to improve efficiency and justice delivery.

Aiyedatiwa further commended the judiciary for its role in sustaining political stability, peace and progress in the state, urging all stakeholders to remain committed to shaping Ondo State’s future.

He pledged continued collaboration to build “a stronger and more prosperous judiciary”.

Earlier, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), highlighted the formative processes involved in the creation of the state and charged the judiciary to remain committed in the dispensation of justice to the people.

In his address, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Akure branch, Umar Friday , appreciated the governor for attending to the needs of the association.

He also urged the governor to expedite the purchase of vehicles for magistrates in the state to speed up judgement processes.

The court session was attended by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami; Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chief Olamide Oladiji; former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; Justices of the State High Court; APC chieftain, Olusola Oke (SAN); and lawyers, among others.
