Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has expressed deep sorrow over the brutal killing of 14-year old Faith Moses, who was reportedly kidnapped and murdered by suspected gunmen in Emure Ekiti, last week.

Describing the incident as devastating, the governor assured that justice would be served, revealing that two suspects had already been apprehended by the police.

Oyebanji urged security agencies to track down all those responsible, emphasizing that outsiders perpetrating such heinous crimes must be exposed and prosecuted.

On the ongoing dispute over the vacant Elemure stool, the governor dismissed speculations that his administration was attempting to impose a candidate.

He reaffirmed that the government does not interfere in the traditional selection process of any community.

The Elemure royal seat, considered one of the most prestigious in Ekiti State, became vacant following the passing of Oba Emmanuel Adebayo, a retired Police Commissioner, on May 31, 2023.

Governor Oyebanji addressed members of the community during a condolence visit to the bereaved family and a stakeholders’ meeting on the selection of a new monarch.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye, Oyebanji expressed concern over the worsening insecurity in the border town.

He suggested that the criminals likely had internal support from some locals, stressing that such collaborations must be stopped.

“The rise in violent attacks is alarming. You must stay vigilant because no group of criminals can infiltrate your town without insider support,” he warned.

The governor reassured residents that his administration was empowering security agencies and local hunters to enhance safety of residents in the state.

He cited ongoing collaborations with neighbouring states—Kwara, Ondo, Kogi, and Osun and stressed the importance of continued forest patrols in partnership with security forces.

He also cautioned youths against aiding criminal elements, warning that such acts undermine efforts to secure the community.

On the royal succession dispute, Oyebanji urged the ruling house and kingmakers to remain neutral, fair, and transparent in choosing the next Elemure, ensuring that the decision aligns with the town’s traditions.

“The Emure Chieftaincy Declaration mandates Ifa consultation in selecting the new king.

“This should not be disregarded, as it ensures a widely accepted and legitimate ruler,” he noted.

Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana (Rtd.), the governor’s Special Adviser on Security, assured that the government would intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property across the state.

Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Eribo, pledged continued collaboration with local security outfits, including Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and Agro Rangers, to combat crime.

“Our effectiveness depends on intelligence gathering. We urge residents to provide credible information and help in monitoring suspicious individuals in their communities,” Eribo stated.

He added that police checkpoints would be reinforced at border posts to track movements and prevent criminals activities.

Community leaders, including Chief Michael Ajibola, Chief Samuel Ogundeji, Hon. Kehinde Boluwade, and Mr. Olu Okeya, commended the governor for his commitment to security.

They renewed calls for additional military posts and an increased police presence in Emure to address the town’s vulnerability.

Dignitaries at the meeting included the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Oyeniyi Adebayo; Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Home Affairs; Hon. Ojo Atibioke, Commissioner for Agriculture; Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade; Regent of Elemure, Betty Taiwo Oladimeji; kingmakers, community leaders, and representatives of women groups.
