Rainfall: Ondo residents cry out as flood wreaks havoc

By Kayode Olabanji, Okitipupa

Residents of Okitipupa, the administrative headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area, have cried out over the severe flooding that has devastated their community, leaving many homeless and causing extensive property damage.

The recent downpour, which marked the second heavy rainfall of 2025, resulted in widespread flooding, destroying homes and severely disrupting daily life.

The worst-hit area was Apata New Site, with residents pointing out that Apata New Site B has been particularly prone to flooding for several years.

The community also condemned the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters during rainfall, urging people to stop this dangerous practice.

In separate interviews with Weekend Hope, affected residents lamented the poor state of the drainage system, which they believe is the main cause of the recurring floods.

They have called on the Ondo State Government to urgently construct proper drainage channels to prevent further disasters.

One of the residents, Mr. Ayo Morebise, described the situation as “unbearable,” stating that the floodwaters have not only destroyed homes but have also made roads impassable. “This is just the second rain here with this kind of flood, imagine if this rain continues,” he said.

Another resident, Mrs. Idowu Adetunji, expressed concerns about the potential spread of waterborne diseases due to stagnant water and poor sanitation.

The community is now appealing for urgent government intervention, urging relevant authorities to prioritise the construction of drainage systems and implement flood control measures before the situation worsens.
