The Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government area, Hon. Ayo Ajana, was roughened up by some unknown individuals at the All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial primary election in Ward 14 at Oba-Akoko on Monday.
Media aide to the chairman, Momoh Jawad Oladeji, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday and obtained by THE HOPE.
The statement, titled ‘Hon. Ayo Ajana Manhandled During APC Direct Senatorial Primary In Oba Akoko Ward 14,’ reads, “The events that occurred today during the APC direct primary election in Oba Akoko Ward 14 are unfortunate and have raised concerns about the conduct of the exercise.
“What was intended to be a peaceful democratic process was disrupted by rising tension, which led to some disorder at the venue and temporarily affected the smooth conduct of the election.
“In the course of the incident, Hon. Ajana was manhandled and whisked away from the scene to prevent further escalation and from being lynched
“We strongly condemn all and any form of violence, intimidation, or misconduct capable of undermining the integrity of the democratic process. Primary elections are meant to reflect the will of party members in an orderly and peaceful environment.
“While political contests naturally come with differing interests and emotions, such differences must always be managed within the bounds of peace, respect, and decorum. The events of Monday are regrettable and should be properly addressed to prevent a recurrence.
“We, therefore call on all supporters and party members to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, as the leadership of the party and relevant authorities look into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Appropriate steps should be taken to ensure accountability where necessary.
“At this time, it is important to emphasise unity, restraint and respect for democratic values. Our political process must continue to be guided by fairness, order and mutual respect. Our democracy deserves better.”
