Ondo State Committee on Drugs Control has cautioned students against intake of hard drugs and other illicit substances to prevent attack on their health.
Members of the committee who were on a sensitisation visit to Aquinas College, Akure, last Wednesday, added that such substances were capable of damaging the brain and other vital parts of the body.
According to a member of the committee and Deputy Director, Pharmaceutical Services at the Ondo State Ministry of Health, Pharmacist Olafusi Omotiba who addressed the students of the college explained that enhancers could harm growing brains and hinder its optimal performance.
He said that drug abuse has negative effects on students’ academic career, noting that it was important that they avoid gatherings that could lure them into drug abuse.
He attributed the increase in crime rate in the society to high level of drug abuse among the youths stating that it could alter the lives of the students negatively.
Omotiba advised the students to report to the school management anyone luring them into taking drugs.
Also speaking, Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Drug Demand Reduction Unit, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ondo State Command, Mrs. Yetunde Jeyifous said that drug abuse leads to untimely death and advised the students to set standard for themselves, so as to maintain healthy lifestyle.
The Principal of the school,Mr. Michael Afolabi described the sensitisation as life impacting, saying it would help the students to chart a better life for themselves.
He urged the students to stay away from anything that would adversely affect their future.
He however promised to inaugurate a Drug-Free Club in the school to spearhead the campaign against drug abuse among the students.
The Senior Prefect of the school, Master Moses Adejuyigbe appreciated the committee for the sensitisation campaign, saying it would help the students to keep away from illicit drugs.
He promised to continue to champion the campaign against drug abuse in the school.
