Immediate past President of Association of Community Pharmacists in Nigeria (ACPN), Pharm. Samuel Adekola, has blamed the problems facing the health sector in the country on the medical personnel taking leadership positions in the sector.
He justified the fresh 15-day strike notice issued to the Federal Government by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) to embark on industrial action.
Adekola said this on Sunday while speaking with journalists during a dinner organized by his friends to celebrate his homecoming and expiration of his 3-years single-term in office as President of the association in Akure.
He, however, noted that there have been some medical personnel in the saddle that have integrity, stressing that they were overwhelmed by undue pressure from their colleagues to destroy the system.
The former President absolved the union, saying, “It is because they have seen what the resident doctors are taking the Federal government through, and it appears the FG has budged to them. If FG had budged to them, why will it not budge to the other group?
“The truth is that for Nigeria to have the health security right, it needs administrators that are not medically-inclined.”
He also suggested that the chairmen of committees in the National Assembly should not be medical personnel, revealing that there was a deliberate move to bastardize the sector out of professional espionage.
Friends and well-wishers, who graced the occasion included the Acting State Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Ade Adetimehin; the former Head of Service and Special Adviser to the Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye.
