As Nigerians continue to grapple with rising food prices, high transportation costs, unstable electricity supply and the increasing cost of basic goods and services, concerns over the country’s harsh economic realities have continued to dominate public discussions.
WEEKEND HOPE spoke to individuals on practical steps government can take to reduce the cost of living for Nigerians.

In my opinion, the high cost of living is largely driven by the rising price of petroleum. If petroleum prices are reduced, the cost of other goods and services would also decrease because petroleum influences almost every sector of the economy.
The government should establish stronger regulatory bodies to monitor and control the prices of goods. At the moment, many manufacturers fix prices without proper regulation, which often results in excessive profit-making. The government needs to pay closer attention to product pricing and ensure fair pricing for consumers.
The high cost of living in Nigeria is largely caused by high fuel prices, unstable electricity supply, poor road networks and inadequate support for farmers and small businesses. When fuel prices rise, transportation becomes more expensive, which in turn increases the cost of food, goods and services. Many business owners also face challenges due to unreliable electricity, forcing them to spend heavily on generators and fuel to sustain their operations.
In addition, poor road conditions make it difficult for farmers to transport their produce to markets, leading to food spoilage and increased food prices. To address these challenges, the government should improve road infrastructure, ensure a stable electricity supply, provide subsidies and support for farmers and introduce policies that encourage the growth of small businesses. These measures would help reduce the burden of the high cost of living and make life more affordable for Nigerians.

Nigeria needs more companies and industries so that unemployed youths can have jobs and stay away from social problems like cybercrime and drug abuse. The government should create more opportunities for young people, but the youths themselves must also be willing to work hard and make proper use of those opportunities.
The government should also manage the country’s resources properly, especially petroleum products, by reducing fuel prices. When fuel becomes cheaper, transportation costs will reduce, goods and services will become more affordable and the high cost of living Nigerians are facing will ease.
The high cost of living in Nigeria is largely caused by high fuel prices, poor road networks and unstable electricity supply. When fuel prices rise, the cost of transportation and production also increases, which leads to higher prices of goods and services. Bad roads make the movement of goods more difficult and expensive, especially for farmers and traders, thereby increasing the cost of food items.
Furthermore, unstable electricity supply forces many small businesses to depend on generators, which raises their operating expenses and the prices charged to customers. Traders, transporters and many other citizens are affected because their daily costs continue to rise. If the government improves road infrastructure, ensures stable electricity and properly manages fuel prices, the standard of living will improve. These measures will help businesses grow, reduce financial pressure on families and make essential goods and services more affordable.

To the best of my understanding, the government can reduce the high cost of living by creating more employment opportunities. When people have stable sources of income, they are better able to afford essential needs such as food, rent and transportation.
Furthermore, the government should establish more industries, provide small businesses with low-interest loans and revive technical and vocational schools, so that young people can acquire practical skills. Reducing unemployment will improve people’s purchasing power and help ease the burden of the high cost of living.
The government should fulfil its promises and address the needs of citizens, as many Nigerians are still facing serious challenges due to the high cost of living. The country generates enough revenue from taxes and natural resources, but poor management continues to make life difficult for the people. For instance, repairing Nigeria’s refineries would reduce the dependence on imported fuel and help lower the cost of petroleum products.
In addition, the government should prioritise youth empowerment by creating jobs and providing skill acquisition opportunities. This would help reduce crime, improve productivity and strengthen the economy. Nigeria has enough resources to cater for its citizens, but these resources must be properly managed and utilised. Citizens should also continue to pray for responsible leadership that will prioritise the welfare of the people and improve living conditions across the country.
