Nigerian tennis recorded another landmark achievement as rising star, Seun Ogunsakin, qualified for the main draw of the Wimbledon Junior Championships with an emphatic 6-3, 6-1 victory over Canada’s Benjamin Azar in the qualifying rounds.
Ogunsakin’s qualification for one of the world’s most prestigious Grand Slam tournaments marks another milestone for Nigerian tennis, underlining the growing progress being made in the development of young players capable of competing on the international stage.
The latest success comes amid renewed optimism for the sport following sustained investment in athlete development and grassroots programmes by the National Sports Commission (NSC) in collaboration with the Nigeria Tennis Federation.
The NSC said the strategic reforms and investments being championed by its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, are beginning to produce tangible results, with more Nigerian athletes making their mark in international competitions.
Earlier this year, Nigerian tennis celebrated another historic achievement when the national team secured promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II for the first time in almost 30 years.
Nigeria defeated the highly rated Uzbekistan 3-1 in Lagos, a victory that also marked the return of top-level international tennis to the country after a 19-year absence.
The hosting of the Davis Cup tie in Lagos was widely regarded as another indication of the renewed momentum in Nigerian tennis and the growing confidence in the country’s ability to stage major international events.
Congratulating Ogunsakin and the Nigeria Tennis Federation on the Wimbledon qualification, the National Sports Commission described the achievement as a testament to the country’s improving tennis programme.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to providing an enabling environment for athletes to excel, expressing confidence that more Nigerian players would emerge to compete successfully on the global stage and bring honour to the country.
