An Akure based lawyer, Mr. Yemi Adetoyinbo has explained that civil servants have right to participate actively in the 2023 general elections as eligible voters to elect individual that will fulfil electioneering campaigns and meet their needs.
Adetoyinbo in a chat with The Hope said civil servants have right to vote during election but not expected to engage in partisan politics.
“Constitutionally, the role of civil servants is only limited to vote,” he said.
He further explained that they were not expected to join political party and added that they were constitutionally barred from becoming card carrying members of political parties.
The legal practitioner added that it was unconstitutional for them to attend political meeting either as a member, contestant in election, either as sponsored candidate or promoting any candidate of political party during election.
“Otherwise, any civil servant that does so will be dismissed from service.
“It is clear that any public service holder other than those already elected or private individual cannot contest in an election,” he stated.
He, therefore, explained that public office holders must resign their appointments with a period of 30 days as notice to join political party or to contest election.
