Communal clash: Adeleke relaxes curfew, warns monarchs

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

As peace gradually returns to the previously tense communities of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has approved the immediate relaxation of the curfew imposed on the areas.

In view of the upcoming Eid El Kabir celebration and ongoing improvements in community relations, the Governor directed that the curfew will now run from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily, effective from Sunday, 25 May 2025.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, in Osogbo, the state capital.

Alimi noted that the previously enforced 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew has now been relaxed as a result of the “near-total return to peace” in the warring communities.

Governor Adeleke, while commending the efforts of community leaders and residents in restoring harmony, issued a stern warning to the traditional rulers of the three towns. He urged them to ensure their subjects remain law-abiding, stating that any monarch whose subject is caught disrupting the peace will be held accountable under the law.

“Following the near-total return to peace in the communities of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun, I am pleased to announce that the curfew will now be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting Sunday, 25 May,” the Governor stated.

“I commend the people of the three towns and all stakeholders for the progress made so far. However, I have directed security operatives—including the Army, Police, DSS, and Civil Defence—to maintain 24-hour surveillance in the affected areas.”

Governor Adeleke also used the opportunity to extend Eid El Kabir greetings in advance to both Muslim and non-Muslim residents of the state, urging everyone to continue to uphold peace and unity.
