Cyberbullying, defamation: Ondo AG warns social media abusers

By Fisayo Akinduro

The Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo (SAN), has raised concerns over the growing misuse of free speech laws, warning that cyberbullying, defamation, and malicious online attacks against public officials will no longer be tolerated.

Ajulo, speaking in the wake of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held in Ondo State, lamented that social media platforms were being weaponised to spread misinformation and character assassination.

He insisted that the state government would not hesitate to bring offenders to justice.

The NEC meeting, which returned to Ondo after more than a decade, was hailed as a landmark gathering, reinforcing the state’s position as a leader in legal excellence and judicial development.

Ajulo commended the State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for his commitment to legal reforms and governance, noting that the NBA leadership acknowledged Ondo’s efforts in strengthening judicial infrastructure.

He emphasised that beyond the prestige of hosting such a high-profile event, the gathering had shed light on critical issues affecting the legal system, particularly the misuse of digital platforms to undermine governance.

Reviewing the key takeaways from the meeting, Ajulo expressed dismay over the alarming rise in defamatory content and cyber harassment targeted at government officials.

He warned that the trend, if left unchecked, could deter investors and hinder development.

“The most unfortunate reality is that social media and online platforms have become tools for some individuals to engage in reckless falsehoods, cyber harassment, and deliberate misinformation in the name of free speech,” he said.

The Attorney General maintained that governance thrives on constructive criticism, not baseless attacks meant to damage reputations and disrupt progress.

“When you assassinate the character of those at the forefront of governance, you send the wrong signal to investors and stakeholders. How can we attract development if the very individuals championing progress are being unjustly discredited?” he queried.

Ajulo reaffirmed the Aiyedatiwa-led administration’s commitment to protecting democratic values, stating that while free speech is guaranteed, it does not extend to libel, defamation, or targeted online harassment.

“Let me make it clear, where necessary, the government will apply sanctions in full accordance with the law. Justice must take its course, even if, as the saying goes, ‘heaven will fall,'” he declared.

He, however, assured that Ondo State remains committed to governance guided by law and order, with mechanisms in place to protect citizens’ rights.

“The Ondo State Government believes in dialogue, accountability, and freedom of expression, but that freedom must be exercised responsibly. We will not sit idly by while some individuals use digital platforms as weapons of destruction rather than tools for meaningful discourse,” he added.

Ajulo announced that the government would strengthen its monitoring of digital platforms, stressing that offenders would face legal consequences under existing cybercrime laws.

“We are fully prepared to act swiftly and decisively to protect the dignity of all citizens and uphold the integrity of governance. Monitoring systems have been put in place, and the state will not hesitate to prosecute offenders who cross the boundaries of responsible speech,” he stated.

The Attorney General urged media professionals, civil society organisations, and the public to promote responsible journalism and ethical discourse.

“We must move beyond destructive criticisms and embrace constructive dialogue that drives state progress. Let us debate, analyse, and hold leaders accountable, but let it be done with integrity, responsibility, and a genuine commitment to development,” he urged.
