The Ondo State Government’s task force on taxi operations has begun issuance of N300 daily government tickets to taxi drivers.
The enforcement and monitoring exercise followed suspension of the activities of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in the state.
The Hope reports that the state government some weeks ago suspended NURTW and RTEAN from issuing tickets as a result of the leadership crisis in the two unions.
The government then issued a new order that taxi drivers will collect government’s ticket of N300 on a daily basis as against the N700 previously paid.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale during the commencement of the ticketing in Akure noted that the era of hooliganism and ticket evasion is over and that the government has fully taken over the issuance of tickets.
Some taxi drivers while appreciating Governor Akeredolu, expressed satisfaction with the new policy.
It is believed that with this new development, there will be stability in both the operations of the drivers and the cost of transportation.
