A political analyst, Mr Gbenga Ajisafe, has urged politicians and residents of Ondo State to draw important lessons from the just-concluded Osun State governorship election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ajisafe, who made the call while speaking on the political implications of the election, said the outcome should not merely be celebrated or criticised, but carefully studied by political actors in Ondo State.
He said the victory of Governor Ademola Adeleke showed that voters could alter political calculations when they established a strong connection with a candidate and his administration.
He stressed that the outcome also demonstrated that party affiliation, political structures and assumptions about automatic support could no longer guarantee electoral success.
He said, “For us in Ondo State, this should get our attention. If we truly want to succeed in 2027, we must return to the grassroots.
“We need to talk to our people, listen to their concerns and make sure the things we are doing are actually reaching them.”
Ajisafe stressed the need for political office holders and aspiring politicians in the state to ensure that government programmes and achievements had a direct impact on the people.
He noted that such achievements should not remain within government offices or be discussed only at political meetings, but should be communicated effectively and felt by residents at the grassroots.
The analyst maintained that politics was ultimately about the people, adding that politicians must earn the trust of the electorate by maintaining meaningful relationships with them and clearly communicating their vision.
“Politics is ultimately about people. They must know who you are, trust you and understand what you stand for,” Ajisafe said.
He urged political actors in Ondo State to begin preparations early by reconnecting with the electorate and paying closer attention to their concerns.
“Osun has happened. We have seen the result. The question for all of us in Ondo now is simple: are we ready to learn from it before 2027?”
