Travel Agent charged over N25m fraud

A 50-year-old travel agent, Olayiwola Taofik, has been dragged before an Akure Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly defrauding one Godwin Olayeni , of N25million.
The defendant was brought to court on a-two-count charge of stealing and fraud.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.
The defendant was said to have committed the offence between the months of June 2018 and December 2019, at Orita-Obele Estate Akure, in the Akure Magisterial District.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Adesegun, the accused person fraudulently obtained the sum of N24, 750 million from one Olayemi Godwin, with a promise to procure visa documents for his wife and two children.
But the accused person was said to have fraudulently collected the money from the complainant and converted it to his personal use.
The prosecution said the contravened sections 383, 418 and punishable under sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37 Vol 1, Laws of Ondo State Nigeria 2006.
Counsel to the accused person, Mr Henry Obogwu, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal.
He added that his client was still presume innocent until found guilty of the offence leveled against him.
The Magistrate, Mr. Olanipekun Mayomi, admitted the accused to N1million bail with two sureties in like sum.
He added that the sureties must be residents within the court’s jurisdiction.
He case was adjourned till December 14, 2020 for hearing in a related case, a 35-year-old carpenter, Adeyeni Omoleyin has been arraigned before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding his customer.
The accused person who was charged with fraud and stealing pleaded not guilty to the two counts offences he allegedly committed on October 29, 2020 at Omi-Okun, Ondo Road in Ile-Ife.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the accused person fraudulently collected N25,000 from one Adeolu Mayowa on the pretence that he would make four stools and a table for him, which he failed to do.
The offence committed contravened sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun.
The accused person was not represented in court.
The Magistrate Adedotun Adebayo, granted N25, 000 bail to the accused person with one surety in like sum.
Adebayo directed that the surety must swear to an affidavit of means, reside within the court’s jurisdiction, while his address must be verified by the prosecutor.
The case was adjourned till December 21, 2020 for hearing.
