The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo State Command, has said the Road Traffic Crash (RTC) recorded 8 deaths, 26 injuries and 71 crashes in the state, during the 2018 yuletide period.
The Sector Commander, Mr Rotimi Adeleye, disclosed this in an interview with The Hope Metro on Wednesday.
He said, “This December figures indicated a general reduction in all parameters, with the amazing reduction in crashes and fatality cases respectively, compared with those of previous years.
“Based on our usual programme at the Federal Road Safety Corp in ensuring safety of the road on our highways, we were really prepared for the year, because all Commanding Officers across the state were invited to the headquarters and admonished on the need to make our roads safe.
Adeleye recalled that, “just three days ago, a vehicle with eight occupants coming from Lagos lost its tyre and so somersaulted several times on Omotosho bridge.
“Four were dead, while the other four were rushed to Glory View hospital in Ore.
“During our follow up, two lost their lives at the hospital. But the two remaining passengers have been discharged.
“However we have identified the black spots around Ondo state and in every axis. Places like Oyearugbulem junction, Uso and Owo axis. Oka in Akoko axs have been known to be very busy during the yuletide period and this has been a big concern for us at the command.
According to the Commander, “Oka-Akoko area happens to be one of the most turbulent areas for us, as accidents are frequently caused by trucks climbing the hilly areas.
“That made us to create an alternative road which became our jackpot. The route was opened strictly for trucks to reduce accidents on our high ways.
The Hope Metro learnt that analysis based on crash prone routes revealed that Oka Akoko road recorded the highest number of crashes in the month under review, but none has been recorded at this period.
He stated that the step so far taken indicated a reduction in the number of road crashes during the period, when compared with previous yuletide seasons.
