Malaria: Pregnant, nursing mothers seek attention

Pregnant and nursing mothers in Ondo State have called on the state government to provide adequate health facilities to cater for pregnant and nursing mothers, who are most at the high risk of malaria disease.
Speaking in separate interviews with The Hope, they decried the scarcity of treated mosquito net and lack of standby medical professionals to attend to them when infected with malaria.
In her appeal, Mrs Esther Moses said that government should give pregnant women and nursing mothers proper attention and safeguard their lives and that of their babies’
At the Basic Health Center Igisogba, Mrs Toyin Taiwo lamented that they were unable to access any treated mosquito net at the health facility but received only medications like ferrous, vitamin C, B Complex and mineral-vitamin supplements.
She said government should provide a scanning machine and many other sophisticated equipment, as well as a doctor at the basic health center to attend to pregnant women and their unborn children.
In her lamentation, Mrs Omowumi Taiwo said that pregnant women and nursing mothers were only given basic drugs such as Paracetamol, folic acid, blood tonic and B. complex but other medical attention were not given to them.
She said only their blood pressure were checked nothing else.
Mrs Taiwo and other pregnant women appealed to the state government to rekindle the Abiye programme that offers free treatment for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children from five years and below
She expressed dissatisfaction that nurses only tested their Blood Pressure and weight without checking the health status of their unborn children.
