Nigeria football Sunday witnessed another sad moment as Nasarawa United player, Chineme Martins slumped and died during the matchday 23 of the NPFL encounter with Katsina United.
The incident occurred after he collided with Katsina United player in the centre of the field and landed awkwardly during the first half.
The medical personnel rushed to the field but effort to revive him was unsuccessful.
The situation was made worse when the ambulance stationed in the field failed to start and was pushed into the field.
A Nigeria police van was brough in but immediately the governor’s Press Crew bus was brought in to rush him to the hospital.
But it was understood that he died right there in the field.
Although Nasarawa United won the match 3-0, the victory was overshadowed by Martins death as the players, coaches and officials of the club cried profusely after the final whistle.
Speaking with our correspondent who was at the stadium, Nasarawa United media Officer, Eche Amos described the situation as pathetic.
“It is pathetic. It is terrible. We are all shocked. He was hale and hearty, hence his selection for the match. We are all saddened by this.
As I am speaking with you, Chineme Martins’ body is in the mortuary. It is sad”, he said.
The last time this ugly incident happened was in 1992 when former Super Eagles player, Samuel Okwarakji slumped and died during a World Cup qualifier against Angola in Lagos.
