Rainstorm wreaks havoc as mechanic escapes death

A 49-year-old mechanic, (names withheld) at the weekend, cheated death when a storm destroyed property worth millions of naira near Abiodun Aloba street, off Ondo Road, Isinkan, in Akure South local government area of Ondo State.

The victim was reported to have earlier gone missing after the heavy downpour, but was later found alive under the damaged shop alive.

The Hope Metro gathered that no fewer than 11 vehicles were badly affected by the storm while five roof tops were blown off.

According to reports, the storm ravaged the rooftop of houses and shops in the area.

The source said, “Thank God nobody got injured, but lots of properties were badly destroyed.

“So far, 11 vehicles were badly affected by the storm and five roofs in front of the mechanic workshop were also pulled off and landed on top of the vehicles.

“After a head count, I realised the owner of the mechanic shop was not among us and I knew he was working on a vehicle.

“We searched for him for over three hours, and later found him under a fallen roof feeling very unconscious. We, thereafter, rushed him to the nearest hospital.

Also speaking to The Hope Metro, a shop owner, Mrs Ronke Alabi, who was very sad about the situation, lamented, that the rainstorm pulled off the roof of her shop and destroyed all her goods.

Other affected areas were Infinity Hotel and houses beside the residence of one Mrs Ajijo’s, whose roof blew off and landed on her car.

The Hope Metro gathered that a victim, popularly known as Mama Victor, who owns a patient medicine store, also had the roof top of the shop blown off by the rainstorm that destroyed most of her drugs. She called on the Ondo State Government to come to her aids.

According to her, the medicine store has been her family’s only source of livelihood, calling on the authorities to see what they can do to rescue them from the disaster.

The victims appealed to both the Federal and the State Governments and other public spirited persons and institutions, especially NEMA and SEMA to urgently come to their assistance.
