WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons in epic clash with Cameroon Sunday

Quarter-final bout coming after 6-2 victory over Egypt

Defending champions, Nigeria have booked a blockbuster quarter-final clash against Cameroon at the ongoing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Super Falcons secured their place in the last eight after a commanding 6–2 victory over Egypt in their final group-stage match. They will face Cameroon on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.

The Super Falcons produced one of their most clinical performances of the tournament at the Stade Moulay Hassan, with six different moments of quality overwhelming the North Africans as Nigeria reaffirmed their status as favourites to retain the continental crown.

Asisat Oshoala gave Nigeria the breakthrough in the 21st minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot after a VAR review adjudged an Egyptian defender to have handled the ball inside the area.

The 10-time African champions, continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when substitute Gift Monday finished off an expertly worked short-corner routine involving Toni Payne and Rinsola Babajide.

Egypt responded almost immediately with a goal before the interval to reduce the deficit to 2–1 and offer themselves a lifeline.

Any hopes of a comeback were swiftly extinguished after the restart as Nigeria resumed control.

Substitute Uchenna Kanu restored the two-goal cushion in the 57th minute with a composed left-footed finish after the Falcons carved open the Egyptian defence.

The floodgates opened in the closing stages as Nigeria earned two further penalties following VAR interventions.

Christy Ucheibe converted the first in the 80th minute before captain Rasheedat Ajibade confidently dispatched the second eight minutes later to put the result beyond doubt.

There was still time for one final flourish deep into stoppage time. Monday and Ajibade combined brilliantly to split the Egyptian defence, allowing Joy Omewa to apply a simple finish for her maiden WAFCON goal and complete an emphatic 6–2 victory.

The commanding performance sends a clear warning to the remaining contenders as Nigeria continue their quest for another continental title.

The Super Falcons will now shift their attention to a mouth-watering quarter-final encounter against old rivals Cameroon, with a place in the last four at stake.
