Men of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested one Nnamdi Anyaji for allegedly killing his mother and attempting to take his own life.
Anyaji, aged 49, and a native of Amudo Village in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, was said to have murdered his 68-year-old mother, Mrs Dorathy Anyaji, during a quarrel over the sharing of proceeds from a cassava business.
It was learnt that after committing the act, the suspect tried to take his own life but was overpowered and apprehended by neighbours.
Spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, said a bloodstained axe was recovered from the scene.
Ikenga said, “Police operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station, on 11th April 2025, at about 1:40pm, arrested one Nnamdi Anyaji, aged 49, of Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, who attempted to take his own life after killing his mother, Mrs Dorathy Anyaji, aged 68, of the same address.
“The operatives also recovered one axe at the scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that the quarrel started when the suspect accused the deceased of being dishonest with the money realised from a cassava business.”
